World Water Day

The world we live in revolves around water and the need for it. Without water, life simply will not exist. In 1993, the United Nations decided to bring awareness to the importance of water and named March 22nd World Water Day. This particular year, 2017, is dedicated to wastewater.

Wastewater is any water used from faucets, toilets even gutter runoffs. Water runoff is a huge problem because most of it goes untreated and in most countries it gets recycled back into their drinking supply but not cleaned.

According to the EPA, 80% of the U.S. will have water shortages under average conditions in the next decade and there are so many ways you can help prevent that.

Examples would be to shut off the water while brushing your teeth, place a bottle in the tank of your toilet to use less when flushing. You can even check your faucets for drips and fix them if they do drip. The average American uses 100 gallons of water a day and a dripping faucet can waste over 8 gallons of water per day. That adds up to around 180 showers.

70 percent of Earth is covered by water but less than 1 percent can be used for humans. Of that one percent more and more water each day becomes polluted because of poor wastewater treatment.

According to Wateraid.org, a child, under the age of five, dies every two minutes because of dirty water and poor sanitation and every minute a newborn dies from infection because of unsafe water.

These are all conditions that we can help prevent by playing a role in keeping our own water safe and clean.

Recycle if you’re able to, throw your garbage in a trash can and not in the street, plant shrubs and plants along areas of water flow, use environmental friendly detergents, and the list goes on. The problems above may not exist in your neighborhood now but someday they will if we do not care about our water.

Today is World Water Day and you can help provide a cleaner water just by sharing these facts.

  2. I LOVE THIS ARTICLE. Fantastic write up about how important water is to us in our every day life. Great job to whoever wrote this.

  3. Do you guys have sections for just holidays? I would be interested in having my students write some for that purpose. Thanks

  4. It’s a shame that most diseases are from water and all we do is pollute it. It would be so simple to quit letting so much run off into our streams. Also, all the chemicals put in the water like detergents, soaps, oils etc.

  5. Is it actually World Water Day or is that date like all those other days people just designate a day to coffee or a day to chairs etc. Neat article either way.
