You may not recognize the name Wade Mitchell yet but you will. The 8th grader from Woodbury Central has been wrestling since he was four years old and was inspired to wrestle by his older brother Reed who he followed to practice as a kid. A lot has changed since, for example, he is no longer four years old and he is beginning to make a name for himself.

Wade is involved in numerous other sports including football, baseball, track, and cross country but when it comes down to what’s important wrestling takes the cake. Wrestling is his favorite sport and he plans on pursuing it in college, hopefully at the University of Iowa, and then maybe coaching but Wade still has high school to look forward to and he’s already working hard to accomplish those goals.

His most recent meet was at the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals in Cedars Falls, IA back in October. The event had over 2,700 wrestlers representing 43 different states and Wade finished in 3rd place.

When asked what his most memorable wrestling moment is. His response wasn’t the 3rd place finish at Preseason Nationals. It was his first high level tournament, Super Peewee State, where he finished in 5th place.

He said,

“At the time I thought it was the biggest accomplishment in the world. I remember running off the mat jumping into my uncle and dads arms. It was a great experience I will never forget.”

Wade wrestles at 128 pounds but plans on wrestling at 130 at future meets. He is also shooting to wrestle at 138-145 pounds next year at varsity level for the Wildcats. Wade lifts weights every day and practices after school. He also sticks around to learn what he can from the high school kids at their practices as well. In addition to his own training he also helps out with the youth takedown club twice a week giving back to the ones that will someday look up to him as inspiration.

Some would even take time to have individual sessions with me and teach me new techniques. I have many wrestlers who I look up to and am very grateful to have such successful and poised role models. My family has impacted my life tremendously. They continue to support and encourage me to be the best I can be. If it’s taking me to any tournaments or camps I want, they are always there to cheer me on. My big brother Reed especially, he is the one who introduced me to wrestling and would always push me along with my coaches in the wrestling room. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my great coaches, family and everyone who supports me.”

When asked what he does in his spare time Wade responded, “I like to relax by spending time with my friends and family in a quiet environment. I also will never turn down a bowl of ice cream after a tough tournament.”

Wade mentioned that he enjoys going to large meets because the competition is challenging and with his work ethic, attitude and drive we know that the meets will only get bigger for him and maybe the bowls of ice cream.

Congrats on all of your success Wade. We look forward to hearing more about you in the upcoming future.
