The Morningside women’s soccer team had quite an impressive season but it came to an end in the first round at nationals this past weekend. The Mustangs who finished the season 15-6-1 made it to the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championships for the first time since 2007 and faced up against #2 Northwestern Ohio who has shutout their last 11 opponents including Morningside. The final score was 3-0.

The Mustangs had a lot of excitement making it to nationals winning the GPAC Tournament in a 2-1 matchup against Concordia. Jackie Martinez a sophomore and former Wolverine at Sioux City West scored both goals for the Mustangs to lead them to Nationals. She opened up the scoring in the first 10 minutes of play and then with less than a minute left in the contest she put another goal away.   The two goals scored by Jackie were her second and third of the season and both were assisted by Marti Hitz.

In the GPAC semifinal game the Mustangs also had a late goal that lifted them to the victory. This time it was by Taylor Daas scoring her first of the season just minutes after the Mustangs tied it up. Ellie Freebern of Dakota Dunes scored the tying goal assisted by Amy Grause also of Sioux City. The Mustangs were able to hold on to the lead for the remaining 15 minutes to take the 2-1 win against Northwestern that propelled them to the GPAC Championship.

Freshman Merle Bublitz, junior Kristina Sorenson and Sioux City native Amy Samuelson were all named to the All GPAC First Team. Sorenson led the Mustangs defense while Bublitz finished the season scoring 10 goals and 9 assist. Amy Samuelson led the team with 17 goals and 12 assist. Samuelson, who attended Sioux City North, was also named first team Academic All American with a 3.65 GPA majoring in biology and chemistry.

Congrats to the Morningside Mustangs Women’s Soccer team on a great season!!!
