It should be no surprise that the South Sioux City Lady Cardinals basketball team went to state again this year. After all, the mini-dome is filled with state banners from previous years. It’s also no surprise that they returned with another state title beating Norris 48-44 to clinch the Lady Cardinals 12th state title.

The title game was an exciting one for the cardinals especially the final minute of play. With both teams battling back and forth throughout the game it took the last 60 seconds to secure the win for the cardinals.

Kori Fischer of South Sioux City drives past a defender during the Class B Nebraska Girls State Championship.

In fact, they scored 11 points in that final 60 seconds which is the total they scored in each of the first three quarters.

Kori Fischer, who had been in a shooting slump the whole game going 1-8 from the field, came up big sinking two 3-pointers in that 60 second span to help propel the cardinals to victory. She ended the game going 3-11 and scoring 11 points.

Carissa Powell also came up big for the cardinals scoring a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She scored a total of 5 points in the two state games leading to this but showed up big time when it mattered the most.

South Sioux City made it a team effort and everyone came up big when they needed it most. It was a great game to watch and will be exciting to watch another banner raised in the mini dome. Congrats Lady Cardinals on a great season and state title.
