Sometime in May

Sometime in May they began to flutter around us
as we walked to and from school.
We called them Whirly Birds. We gathered a handful
and tossed them as high as we could.
”Watch, see how they whirl around.”
It was magical.
Seeing them landing on my patio, I enjoyed the memory.
The memory of 13th street, lined with Maple trees,
of walking with Bobby.
He carved our initials; BB+BC in one of them.
We were in fourth grade
