There’s a new kayak competition that will take place May 2nd in Yankton. It’s called the Dam N Back Trek and is organized by the same people who started the South Dakota Kayak Challenge, the Fort to Field 50 Paddle Battle and the Yankton Riverboat Days Kayak Run. This race will prove to test any kayak enthusiast as it will have you paddle up the Missouri River current 5 miles from Riverside Park to Gavins Point Dam and then race back another 5 miles to the finish line.
The event is one of three that will take place that Saturday. The first event is the annual Missouri River Cleanup that morning hosted by the National Park Service. The Dam N Back Trek will take place shortly after followed by the Missouri River Rendezvous which is an all outdoor exhibition featuring a wide range of conservation groups and outfitters.
Race organizer Jarett Bies said the course will offer some unique scenery and a true test for paddlers. The water temperature is cold therefore participants are encouraged to wear wetsuits or dry-suit equipment but it is not a requirement. Cotton clothing is, however, prohibited and all who take part will be required to pack along a waterproof bag with a change of clothes, warm socks and gloves and a hat, just in case of an unexpected immersion.
Racers will also have a chance at a Le Mans style event start where they can race to their kayak/canoes that are stationed at the starting line. Safety is the priority and the Yankton County Emergency Management Search and Rescue will be on site to provide safety coverage and to make sure the event runs without issue.
