Our spotlight athlete for this week/month is 19 year old Mitchell Betsworth.  Mitchell has Down syndrome and is an active member of the Sioux City Knights.

The S.C. Knights are a local Special Olympics Iowa program formed approximately 3 years ago.  Mitchell and 70 other local Special Olympic athletes compete in various activities such as basketball, softball, golf, bowling, track, dance, bocce, powerlifting, and swimming.

As fine an athlete as Mitchell is, his parents Troy and Michele are more proud of his good sportsmanship and courteous behavior towards his fellow competitors and teammates.  Mitchell understands that being a Special Olympics athlete is a privilege and will proudly state the oath for you if asked,

“let me win, but if I cannot win let me brave in the attempt.”

When not training or competing in one of his numerous sports, Mitchell attends the L.I.F.E. Academy (Learning Independence Fun Employment) at Western Iowa Tech.    Mitchell continues working towards his ultimate goal of living independently and being a contributing member of the work force.

  1. Everyone should be involved with Special Olympics. It’s great for the community, great for kids and adults whether you have a disability or not. Mitchell is a fantastic kid and will continue to do great things.
